Purkutyö is the process of dismantling or demolishing buildings and other structures. In Finnish construction terminology, it encompasses both controlled demolition and selective dismantling (purkaminen) aimed at removing a structure while preserving materials for reuse or recycling. The work may be carried out on residential, commercial, or industrial sites and includes preparatory activities such as site clearance, utility disconnection, and hazardous material surveying.

Common methods include mechanical demolition using excavators, hydraulic breakers, shears, and crushers; manual dismantling for sensitive areas; and, in some cases, implosion or controlled blasting for large or tall structures. Selective dismantling is often preferred to maximize material recovery and reduce waste.

Purkutyö is subject to strict safety requirements to protect workers and the public; tasks require risk assessment, permits, and compliance with occupational safety and health regulations, as well as environmental controls to manage dust, noise, vibration, and hazardous substances (e.g., asbestos). Site work plans include traffic management and exclusion zones.

Waste from purkutyö is typically sorted on site and sent to recycling or landfill facilities. Construction and demolition waste sorting aims to recover concrete, metals, timber, bricks, and insulation materials.
