Punasus is a fictional genus of small terrestrial herbivorous mammals used in speculative biology and science fiction to illustrate island endemism and adaptive radiation. In most depictions it contains a single species, Punasus minor; some alternate timelines feature Punasus major.

Description: P. minor is described as a compact, furred animal about 25–32 cm long with a short tail, rounded ears, and dense pelage. Dentition is bunodont, suited to fruits, seeds, and soft vegetation. Limbs are short but sturdy, adapted for digging and rapid, short bursts of movement. Pelage color varies by fictional region, often blending with undergrowth.

Distribution and habitat: Punasus is said to be endemic to the Punaria archipelago, a fictional chain of volcanic islands in the southern temperate zone. Habitats range from evergreen forests to scrubby coastal areas with dense understory, providing cover for foraging and refuge from predators in narratives.

Ecology and behavior: Species are described as mostly nocturnal or crepuscular, living in small family groups. Diet includes fruits, seeds, tubers, and foliage, with occasional insect consumption. Reproduction is seasonal, with litters of two to four offspring after a gestation of about two months; parental care is prolonged.

Evolution and in fiction: Punasus is used to illustrate rapid allopatric speciation in isolated archipelagos. In various works, a small ancestral mammal colonizes Punaria and diversifies into microhabitats. Fossils are depicted in the Punaria Formation dating to the late Miocene to early Pliocene, though the chronology is fictional.
