A pump system is a set of equipment designed to move liquids through a network of pipes and components. It typically includes one or more pumps, a motor or driver, piping, valves, fittings, sensors, and control equipment. Its purpose is to provide fluid flow and pressure to meet process or service requirements while overcoming friction losses, elevation changes, and other system head losses.

Types of pump systems commonly used include centrifugal pumps, which add energy to the fluid by rotation of an impeller, and positive displacement pumps, which deliver a fixed amount per cycle. Submersible and in-line configurations are common distinctions; end-suction, vertical turbine, and gear or diaphragm pumps illustrate variety. Applications depend on required flow, pressure, and liquid properties.

Design and operation: Performance is assessed with a system curve and a pump curve. The intersection defines operating point. Key considerations include head, flow, efficiency, net positive suction head (NPSH), cavitation risk, and fluid properties. To control performance, designers use throttling, variable-speed drives, or pumps arranged in series (to raise head) or in parallel (to increase flow). Energy efficiency is a major concern; selection often aims for best efficiency point.

Applications: Water supply, building services (HVAC), irrigation, industrial processing, chemical handling, and wastewater treatment. In facilities, pump systems may be integrated with tanks, basins, and telemetry for monitoring and control.

Maintenance and safety: Regular inspection of seals, bearings, impellers, and couplings; motor cooling; vibration monitoring; lubrication; and replacement of worn components. Redundancy and proper lockout/tagout procedures improve reliability. Standards from organizations such as ISO and ANSI guide design and testing.
