Pumpable describes a material that can be moved or transferred through a pumping system under applied pressure or gravity. In engineering and industry, a substance is considered pumpable if its rheological properties allow flow through pipes, hoses, or pumps without excessive shear, clogging, or segregation. Pumpability depends on viscosity, yield stress, particle content, temperature, and the presence of air or gas.

Common pumpable materials include pumpable concrete and grout used in construction, as well as various emulsions, creams, sauces, and other process liquids in food, cosmetics, and chemical industries. In construction, “pumpable” typically refers to concrete or cementitious mixes designed to be transported by a concrete pump to the work area, enabling long-distance placement and reducing manual handling. In other sectors, pumpability is achieved by adjusting formulation with thixotropic modifiers, flow enhancers, or temperature control. Materials are designed to remain pumpable under operating conditions, while also resisting phase separation or sedimentation during transport.

Pumping requires appropriate equipment; different pump types are chosen based on viscosity and abrasiveness, such as piston or plunger pumps, diaphragm pumps, progressive cavity pumps, or peristaltic pumps. Design considerations include solids content, abrasive wear, air entrainment, and the potential for clogging at joints or valves.
