Pulverskiktning, also known as powder coating, is a dry finishing process in which finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto a grounded object. The charged powder adheres to the object and is then cured in an oven, where it melts and flows to form a smooth, durable, and attractive coating. This method is widely used for coating metals, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative to liquid paints as it contains no solvents and releases negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The process typically begins with the preparation of the substrate, which involves cleaning and often pre-treating the surface to ensure proper adhesion. Next, the powder, which can be thermosetting (like epoxy or polyester) or thermoplastic, is applied using an electrostatic spray gun. The powder particles gain an electrical charge as they pass through the gun, and this charge causes them to be attracted to the grounded workpiece. Once the part is fully coated, it is moved into a curing oven. The heat in the oven causes the powder to melt, fuse together, and then cross-link or polymerize, forming a tough, continuous film.

Pulverskiktning offers several advantages, including excellent durability, resistance to corrosion, chipping, and scratching, and a wide range of available colors and textures. It is commonly applied to metal parts for automotive components, appliances, architectural elements, and general industrial equipment. The thickness and uniformity of the coating are easily controlled, and the overspray can often be collected and reused, minimizing material waste.
