Goals and methods vary by field but generally include removing oils and particulates, removing oxides, improving wettability, stabilizing chemistry, and reducing fouling. Common methods include chemical cleaners, solvents, acids or bases, surfactants, mechanical cleaning, ultrasonic treatment, and mild heating.

Considerations include substrate compatibility, environmental and safety concerns, cost, process integration, and verification of effectiveness through tests such as adhesion, surface energy, or contaminant analysis.
