Pulsioksimeetri, commonly known as a pulse oximeter, is a non-invasive medical device used to measure a person's blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate. It is typically clipped onto a fingertip, toe, earlobe, or forehead. The device works by shining a beam of light through the tissue and measuring how much light is absorbed by oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. Oxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more red light and allows more infrared light to pass through, while deoxygenated hemoglobin absorbs more infrared light and allows more red light to pass through. By comparing the absorption of these two wavelengths of light, the pulsioksimeetri can estimate the percentage of hemoglobin in the blood that is carrying oxygen, known as the oxygen saturation or SpO2.

The normal SpO2 level for a healthy individual is typically between 95% and 100%. Lower readings can indicate various medical conditions, including lung disease, heart problems, anemia, or sleep apnea. A pulsioksimeetri also measures the pulse rate, which is the number of heartbeats per minute. This information is displayed digitally on the device's screen.

Pulsioksimeetrid are widely used in hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services for monitoring patients during surgery, in intensive care units, or for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. They are also available for home use, allowing individuals to monitor their own oxygen levels and pulse rate. While generally accurate, factors such as poor circulation, cold extremities, dark nail polish, or excessive movement can sometimes affect the readings.
