Etymology and classification: The name derives from Verdant Archipelago languages, with puhu meaning night and jiin meaning glow. In-world taxonomy places it in a distinct family, Puhujiinidae, as a monotypic genus.

Physical description and behavior: Adults measure about 14–16 cm in body length, with a prehensile tail of 22–28 cm. The fur is slate gray with a pale dorsal stripe. Large eyes, rounded ears, and agile limbs support nocturnal navigation. They form small family groups and communicate with whistled calls and tail signals; scent marking helps define territories.

Habitat, range, and ecology: Endemic to Mistwood Island and nearby isles, at elevations roughly 600–1800 meters. They primarily eat fruit and seeds while supplementing with insects. The species aids forest dynamics through seed dispersal and personifies a shared canopy niche with several predators, including arboreal snakes and raptors.

Reproduction and status: Breeding occurs once yearly; gestation is about 46 days, with litters of 1–2 offspring. Both parents care for young. In the fictional setting, puhujiin are not listed as endangered, though habitat loss is depicted as a potential threat. The creature also features in local folklore as a nocturnal guardian symbol.
