Psykoosioireet, also known as psychotic symptoms, are a group of mental health symptoms characterized by a loss of contact with reality. These symptoms can manifest in various ways and are a core feature of psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and severe bipolar disorder. They can also occur in other conditions, including substance-induced psychosis, severe depression, or due to certain medical conditions.

The primary categories of psychotic symptoms are hallucinations and delusions. Hallucinations involve perceiving something that is not present in reality, such as hearing voices when no one is speaking, seeing things that are not there, or experiencing unusual sensations like smells or tastes. Delusions are fixed, false beliefs that are not amenable to reason or evidence to the contrary. Examples include believing one is being persecuted, that one has special powers, or that one's thoughts are being controlled by external forces.

Other symptoms that can be associated with psychosis include disorganized thinking and speech, which may involve jumping between topics, using nonsensical language, or having difficulty organizing thoughts. Disorganized or abnormal motor behavior can also be present, ranging from childlike silliness to unpredictable agitation. Negative symptoms, such as a lack of motivation, diminished emotional expression, and reduced social engagement, can also accompany psychotic symptoms, though they are not always considered core psychotic features themselves.

The onset of psychotic symptoms can be gradual or sudden. While these symptoms can be distressing and significantly impair daily functioning, they are often treatable with appropriate medical and psychological interventions, including antipsychotic medications and various forms of therapy. Early intervention is often associated with better outcomes.
