The term itself is a compound of the Greek word "protos" meaning "first" and the Dutch word "kieleen" meaning "language." It is also sometimes referred to as Proto-World or Proto-Human.

The existence of a protokieleen is an inference based on comparative linguistics, a field that reconstructs ancestral languages by comparing related modern languages.
