Protokieleen

Protokieleen is a hypothetical concept in linguistics referring to a hypothetical ancestral language from which all known human languages are thought to have descended. The term itself is a compound of the Greek word "protos" meaning "first" and the Dutch word "kieleen" meaning "language." It is also sometimes referred to as Proto-World or Proto-Human.

The existence of a protokieleen is an inference based on comparative linguistics, a field that reconstructs ancestral languages by comparing related modern languages. While linguists have successfully reconstructed many proto-languages, such as Proto-Indo-European, a definitive reconstruction of a single protokieleen remains elusive due to the vast timescale involved and the significant diversification of human languages over tens of thousands of years.

Evidence for a protokieleen is debated and often relies on identifying deep lexical and grammatical similarities across diverse language families, sometimes referred to as "Sprachbund" effects or macrofamilies. However, establishing these connections with the rigor required for scientific consensus is challenging. Skepticism regarding the possibility of reconstructing such an ancient language is common, with some arguing that the available data is insufficient and that apparent similarities might be due to chance, borrowing, or universal cognitive biases.
