Prostatism refers to a collection of lower urinary tract symptoms that are commonly experienced by men. These symptoms are often associated with the enlargement of the prostate gland, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, prostatism can also be caused by other factors, including inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) or prostate cancer. The symptoms can vary in severity and may include difficulty in starting urination, a weak or interrupted urine stream, frequent urination especially at night (nocturia), a sudden urge to urinate (urgency), and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. In some cases, dribbling after urination may also occur.

The diagnosis of prostatism typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and potentially further tests such as a urinalysis, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, and uroflowmetry. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the symptoms. For mild symptoms, lifestyle modifications or watchful waiting may be recommended. Medications, such as alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, are often used to manage BPH symptoms. In more severe cases or when other treatments are ineffective, surgical procedures may be considered to reduce the size of the prostate or remove obstructions.
