Prosessoriyksikkö, often abbreviated as CPU (Central Processing Unit), is the fundamental component of a computer system responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations. It acts as the brain of the computer, processing data and controlling the operations of other hardware components. The CPU comprises millions or billions of transistors, which are tiny electronic switches that can be turned on or off to represent binary data (0s and 1s).

The primary functions of a CPU include fetching instructions from memory, decoding these instructions to understand what needs to be done, executing the instructions by performing arithmetic, logical, or control operations, and then writing the results back to memory. This continuous cycle, known as the fetch-decode-execute cycle, is the core of its operation.

Modern CPUs are highly complex, featuring multiple cores that allow them to perform several tasks simultaneously, significantly enhancing processing power and efficiency. Clock speed, measured in gigahertz (GHz), indicates how many cycles the CPU can perform per second, with higher speeds generally leading to faster performance. Cache memory, a small but very fast memory located within the CPU, stores frequently accessed data to reduce the time it takes to retrieve it from main memory. The architecture and design of a CPU play a crucial role in its overall performance, power consumption, and suitability for different types of tasks, from general computing to high-performance gaming or scientific simulations.
