Typical layouts include straight-line lines, U-shaped lines, and cellular configurations, often supported by conveyors or automated guided vehicles. Line balancing assigns tasks to stations so that cycle times meet takt time—the rate required to satisfy demand. In many modern lines, automation replaces or augments human labor with robotics, sensors, and programmable logic controllers, while material handling and quality checks are integrated at key points.

Variants include hard-line assembly lines for high-volume products, flexible lines for product families, and modular lines that can be reconfigured. Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma approaches influence line design through waste reduction, preventive maintenance, and quick changeovers (SMED).

Planning considerations include product design, process capability, and supplier integration. Benefits include higher productivity, consistent quality, and shorter lead times; drawbacks include substantial upfront capital, maintenance costs, risk of downtime, and reduced flexibility if demand shifts. Safety and ergonomics are essential, with emphasis on safe material handling and worker well-being.
