Processortomemory refers to the set of hardware components and communication protocols that enable a processor to access its memory subsystem. It encompasses the memory controller, the memory channels and buses, the memory modules themselves, and the on‑die caches and prefetchers that move data between the CPU and DRAM. In modern systems the memory controller is typically integrated into the CPU, coordinating multiple memory channels and managing timing, addressing, and refresh operations.

The path from processor to memory includes several layers. Caches (L1, L2, and often L3) store frequently used data close to the processor to reduce access latency. When data is not in a cache, the processor issues memory requests that travel through the controller to the main memory, usually DRAM arranged in DIMMs. The interface uses standardized memory types (such as DDR4 or DDR5) and associated signaling for reads, writes, addresses, and command strobes. Timings such as CAS latency, tRCD, and tRP describe DRAM access delays, while bus width, number of channels, and clock speeds influence bandwidth.

Performance is governed by latency and bandwidth, as well as memory coherence and consistency across cores. Coherence protocols (for example MESI) maintain valid copies of data in caches. System designers also consider non-uniform memory access (NUMA) effects, memory interleaving, and error detection/correction (ECC) in servers and certain desktops. Ongoing trends include higher-speed memories, larger memory channels, and increasingly integrated memory controllers, all aimed at reducing processor-to-memory delays and increasing data throughput.
