The phrase is more common in Dutch-language sources and does not have a single, universally standardized definition in English-language literature. Broadly, it refers to external or internal influences that disrupt the intended flow, rate, quality, or timing of a process.

Common forms of processinslag include input variability (such as fluctuations in raw material properties or batch-to-batch differences), equipment faults (sensor drift, actuator misalignment, or component wear), process parameter drift (unintended changes in temperature, pressure, or flow), environmental changes (ambient temperature, humidity), human factors (operating errors or procedural deviations), and interruptions (power outages or supply-chain disruptions).

The impact of processinslag can manifest as reduced product quality, increased scrap or rework, downtime, longer cycle times, and greater variability in output. In quality and operations management, processinslag is considered when assessing process capability and risk, and it is often analyzed using statistical process control, real-time monitoring, and other diagnostic tools.
