Privilégie is a type of French textile fabric that has been produced since the 19th century. It is characterized by its characteristic embossed design, typically depicting iconic scenes or motifs, which are raised or embedded between layers of fabric. This unique printing technique gives the fabric a three-dimensional appearance, making it a popular choice for decorative purposes.

Privilégie fabriors used a combination of woodcuts or copper plates, which were inked and pressed into the fabric to create the desired design. The versatility of this technique allowed for mass production of prints with intricate details and vibrant colors. Due to its reasonably priced production, privilégie became a staple for home furnishings, such as wall hangings, bedspreads, and tablecloths.

The name "privilégie" itself refers to the special privilege accorded to the manufacturers, who before 1835 were the only ones allowed to print on certain types of fabric. However, in reality, numerous workshops and weavers produced their own version of privilégie, often adapting their designs to current tastes.

The manufacturing process, while labor-intensive, enabled artisans to produce innovative designs by imprinting the patterns onto cotton and wool, often wool being the more expensive and valued option. This gave rise to distinct variations of privilégie, depending on the fabric type and pre-11th century technique used in its creation. As textile manufacturing evolved, so did the artistic landscape, resulting in increasingly diverse and aesthetically appealing design patterns.
