Privatbilism is an ideology that emphasizes privatization and the primacy of private ownership in economic and social life. Proponents argue that markets, competition, and decentralized decision-making yield greater efficiency, innovation, and consumer choice than government-provided alternatives.

The term is used primarily in Danish-speaking and some European policy debates, where it describes a strand of reformist or libertarian thought advocating shrinking the public sector through outsourcing, privatization of state enterprises, and the expansion of market mechanisms in areas such as healthcare, education, and public utilities. It emerged in the late 20th century alongside broader neoliberal reforms and ongoing debates about the proper scope of the state.

Core tenets include private ownership of most productive resources, market competition as the main allocator of resources, deregulation and reduced public funding for services, and increased reliance on user fees or private providers. Advocates favor contracting out services and public-private partnerships as means to raise efficiency while maintaining nominal public oversight.

Policy outcomes associated with privatism vary by country and sector. Critics warn that emphasis on profit can erode universal access, lower standards, and widen inequality. Supporters counter that well-designed competition and transparent oversight can protect equity while delivering better services.

Privatbilism shares features with neoliberalism and market liberalism but is often distinguished by a pragmatic focus on privatization as a policy tool rather than a comprehensive ideological package. The term is sometimes used polemically to describe reform agendas rather than a formal school of thought.
