Printanje, often referred to as printing, is a process for reproducing text and images, typically on paper. This is accomplished by applying ink or toner to a substrate, most commonly paper, although other materials like fabric, plastic, or metal can also be used. The core principle involves transferring a design or information from a master copy to the material being printed.

Historically, printanje originated with woodblock printing in East Asia. The invention of the movable type printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge and led to the mass production of books and documents. Modern printanje encompasses a wide array of technologies, each suited for different applications and scales.

Common methods include offset printing, which is widely used for commercial printing of books, magazines, and newspapers, and digital printing, which includes inkjet and laser printing. Inkjet printers spray tiny droplets of ink onto the paper, while laser printers use a laser beam to create an electrostatic image on a drum, which then attracts toner particles that are fused to the paper with heat. Other specialized techniques exist for tasks like 3D printing, which builds three-dimensional objects layer by layer from digital designs.
