Primärforskning, or primary research, refers to the collection of original data directly from sources to answer a specific research question or test a hypothesis. Primärforskning is conducted to obtain information that is tailored to the study’s objective, context, and timing.

Methods used in primärforskning can be qualitative or quantitative, or a mixed approach. Quantitative methods include surveys, experiments, field trials, and sensor measurements that yield numerical data. Qualitative methods include interviews, focus groups, participant observation, and ethnography, which provide deeper insights into behaviors, motivations, and contexts. Data collection can occur in laboratories, workplaces, communities, or online, and studies can be cross-sectional or longitudinal.

The research process typically involves defining the research question, designing the study, selecting a sampling strategy, collecting data, analyzing results, and reporting findings. Ethical considerations are central, including informed consent, privacy protection, and minimization of risk to participants. Data management and documentation are important for transparency and reproducibility.

Advantages of primärforskning include control over data quality, relevance to the question, and the ability to address current or context-specific issues. Limitations include higher costs, longer timelines, logistical challenges, and potential biases that must be mitigated. Primärforskning is often complemented by sekundärforskning, which analyzes existing data to inform or contextualize the primary study.
