Pretribulationalism is a theological position within Christian eschatology that interprets the biblical Book of Revelation in a particular way, emphasizing the pre-tribulation rapture of the church. This view holds that the church will be taken to heaven before the seven-year tribulation period described in Revelation 6-19. The term "pre-tribulation" refers to the idea that the tribulation will occur after the rapture, not before or during it.

The pretribulational view is based on a literal interpretation of the Book of Revelation, which is seen as a prophetic book that outlines the end times. According to this view, the church is the body of Christ, and its rapture is a fulfillment of biblical promises. The rapture is often associated with the "catching away" of the church, as described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, where believers will be "caught up" to meet the Lord in the air.

Proponents of pretribulationalism argue that the rapture will occur at a specific time, often interpreted as the "beginning of the tribulation," which is marked by the abomination of desolation in the temple in Jerusalem. This event is seen as a sign that the tribulation has begun, and the church will be raptured just before this occurs.

Critics of pretribulationalism argue that the Book of Revelation is a symbolic or allegorical book, not a literal prophecy. They contend that the pretribulational view is based on a selective interpretation of the text and ignores other biblical teachings. Some critics also argue that the pretribulational view leads to a false sense of security, as it implies that believers will be spared the tribulation.
