A prestressor is a component used in prestressed concrete construction. It is a high-strength steel tendon, wire, or bar that is subjected to a tensile force before or after the concrete hardens. This tensile force, when applied, creates a compressive force within the concrete structure. This internal compression counteracts the tensile stresses that would otherwise develop under service loads, thereby increasing the load-carrying capacity and durability of the concrete.

There are two primary methods of prestressing: pre-tensioning and post-tensioning. In pre-tensioning, the prestressor is tensioned between anchorages before the concrete is poured. Once the concrete has gained sufficient strength, the tension in the prestressor is released, and it transfers its force to the concrete through bond. In post-tensioning, the prestressor is placed within ducts or sheaths in the concrete. After the concrete has hardened, the prestressor is tensioned against the hardened concrete using hydraulic jacks, and then anchored.

The use of prestressors is crucial in creating efficient and durable concrete structures. They allow for longer spans, thinner sections, and reduced cracking compared to conventionally reinforced concrete. Common applications include bridges, parking garages, and high-rise buildings, where the benefits of prestressing are most pronounced.
