pressopannus

A pressopannus, also known as a French press or cafetière, is a coffee brewing device. It consists of a cylindrical pot, typically made of glass or stainless steel, with a plunger that has a fine-mesh filter attached to its end.

To brew coffee using a pressopannus, coarse coffee grounds are placed in the pot. Hot water, just off the boil, is then poured over the grounds. The mixture is allowed to steep for a few minutes, usually between four and six, depending on the desired strength. After steeping, the plunger is slowly pressed down, separating the coffee grounds from the brewed liquid. The resulting coffee is then poured directly from the pot.

The pressopannus is known for producing a full-bodied coffee with a rich flavor and aroma. This is because the metal filter allows more of the coffee's natural oils and fine sediments to pass through into the cup, compared to paper filters used in other brewing methods. It is a relatively simple and portable brewing method, requiring no electricity. The design is attributed to Italian inventor Attilio Calimani in 1929, although similar devices had been developed earlier. It remains a popular choice for home baristas and coffee enthusiasts seeking a robust cup.
