Predipping is a preparatory immersion process in which a substrate is briefly dipped into a liquid bath before the main manufacturing step. The aim is to condition, clean, activate, or prime a surface to improve subsequent adhesion, uniformity, or chemical reactivity.

Applications span several industries. In metal finishing, predipping precedes plating or coating and often involves degreasing, descaling, or surface activation to remove contaminants and create a receptive surface. In coatings and paints, predips prepare the substrate for primer or topcoat by cleaning and sometimes passivating the surface. In textile processing, predipping can involve moisture conditioning or pretreatment with functional chemicals to improve dye uptake and print fidelity.

Common predip baths use detergents, solvents, acids or alkalis, and surface-activating agents. The specific chemistry, temperature, and exposure time depend on the substrate and the subsequent process. After predipping, parts are typically rinsed to remove residual bath before the main operation, and sometimes subjected to a post-wash or neutralization step.

Advantages include improved adhesion and coating uniformity, reduced porosity and defects, faster subsequent processing, and enhanced corrosion protection. Limitations include added processing time, chemical costs, and the need for careful waste handling and compatibility with downstream steps. Safety considerations cover proper ventilation, handling of caustic or acidic solutions, use of personal protective equipment, and compliant disposal of spent or contaminated baths.
