Precontact refers to the time and cultural context preceding sustained contact between distinct cultural groups. The term is commonly used in anthropology and archaeology to describe Indigenous societies in regions such as the Americas before European exploration and colonization, but can apply to any area where distinct cultures interacted prior to a major contact event. The precontact period encompasses a range of social forms, from nomadic hunter-gatherer groups to urbanized, stratified societies, depending on regional history and chronology.

Researchers study precontact societies through material remains, environmental data, and, when available, ethnographic or historical sources. Archaeological methods—such as radiocarbon dating, artifact typology, settlement pattern analysis, and paleoecological studies—help reconstruct economies, technologies, trade networks, social organization, and religious or ceremonial life before contact altered those systems.

Chronologies of precontact periods vary widely. In some regions, contact with outside groups occurred long after initial settlement, while in others, contact with neighboring cultures or traders marks the transition rather than colonization by distant powers. The end of a precontact period is not fixed, but generally corresponds to the onset of sustained contact, the introduction of new diseases, or major disruptions associated with outsider influence.

Scholarly work on precontact periods also addresses interpretive challenges, including biases from colonial perspectives, preservation gaps, and the need to recognize Indigenous agency. Contemporary research emphasizes the diversity, complexity, and dynamism of precontact societies, highlighting that cultural development often continued independently of outside contact.
