Pratishthana is a Sanskrit term used in Hindu, Jain, and related Indian traditions to denote establishment, installation, or consecration. The word comes from pratishthāna or pratishtha, formed from the root sthā “to stand,” with prefixes that convey making something stand or be established. In religious usage, pratishthana often refers to the consecration ceremony during which a deity’s image or a temple is ritually energised and made fit for worship.

In Hindu temple practice, pratishtha is a central ritual that marks the formal opening of a shrine. Priests recite mantras, perform purification rites, and install the main images (murtis) of deities within the sanctum. The ceremony is typically preceded by auspicious calculations, architectural alignment, and subsequent daily worship and offerings. The act is believed to transmute a physical object into a living locus of divine presence, enabling darshan (auspicious viewing) and ritual worship.

In Jainism, pratishtha refers to the consecration of Tirthankar idols and images within temples, making them suitable for worship and pilgrimage. The rites, though distinct in detail from Hindu practices, similarly aim to imbue the idol’s surroundings with sacred energy and to establish a site for communal devotion.

In modern usage, Pratishthana can appear as a proper name for temples, cultural centers, charitable trusts, or publishing houses. As a concept, it remains a key term for the establishment and consecration of sacred spaces and objects in traditional Indian religious life.
