poukaz

Poukaz is a document or electronic record that entitles its bearer to receive goods, services, or a discount from a merchant or organization. In Czech, Slovak, and some other Central European languages, poukaz is commonly used to denote a voucher, gift certificate, or coupon. The concept encompasses both prepaid instruments and a right to a specified value or benefit.

Forms and issuance: Vouchers can be physical paper certificates, plastic cards, or digital codes. They are frequently issued as gifts, customer incentives, refunds, or compensation. Value can be fixed (for example, 1000 CZK) or variable up to a maximum, and can sometimes cover a whole order or be used gradually for multiple purchases. Some poukazy are tied to a specific product, service, or brand; others are more general.

Redemption and terms: To redeem, the bearer presents the poukaz at the point of sale or enters a code online. Terms may include expiry dates, item exclusions, minimum spend requirements, or geographic limits. In most jurisdictions, poukazy are not treated as cash, cannot be exchanged for cash, and replacement may require proof of purchase if lost or stolen. Refunds for unused value depend on the issuer's policy and local law.

Economic and social role: Vouchers are used to promote sales, manage inventory, and reward customers or employees. The rise of digital wallets and online marketplaces has expanded electronic poukazy, with features such as auto-expiry reminders and balance tracking.
