Pottning is the horticultural practice of placing a plant into a pot with fresh soil, typically when the plant outgrows its current container or when starting a cutting in a pot. In practice, pottning is often used interchangeably with potting up or repotting, though some contexts distinguish potting as moving a plant to a larger pot with new soil, while repotting may also involve cleaning or repairing the root system in the same or a larger pot.

Materials and conditions

A well-draining potting mix is essential. Different plants require different textures: many houseplants do well in light, well-draining mixes; succulents and cacti prefer gritty, fast-draining substrates; moisture-loving tropicals may do better with peat- or coir-based mixes enriched with perlite or vermiculite. The pot should have drainage holes, and the size should be proportionate to the plant’s root system—usually a pot only a bit larger than the root ball. Clean tools and fresh soil help prevent disease.

Procedure

Water the plant before potting to ease removal. Gently loosen the root ball and trim any dead roots if needed. Place a layer of fresh soil in the new pot, position the plant so the root collar sits at the same level as in the old pot, then fill and firm the soil around the roots. Water thoroughly to settle the mix and remove air pockets.

Timing and care

Spring and early summer are common for pottning, aligning with new growth. Avoid pottning flowering plants or during dormancy for many species. Aftercare includes monitoring moisture, avoiding overwatering, and providing appropriate light and humidity.

Common issues

Overly large pots can lead to waterlogging; using a soil that’s too dense can restrict root growth; ensure proper drainage and avoid contaminated or old soil. Pottning can promote healthier root development and renewed growth when done correctly.
