Postthrombotic syndrome, abbreviated as PTS, is a long-term complication that can develop after a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the legs. When a clot forms, it can damage the vein and its valves, which are responsible for ensuring blood flows in one direction, towards the heart. Over time, this damage can lead to chronic venous insufficiency.

Symptoms of postthrombotic syndrome can vary in severity and may include pain, swelling, heaviness, and skin changes in the affected limb. The skin may become discolored, dry, itchy, and in more severe cases, can develop ulcers that are slow to heal. These symptoms typically worsen after prolonged standing or sitting and may improve with elevation of the limb. The onset of PTS can occur weeks, months, or even years after the initial DVT.

Diagnosis of postthrombotic syndrome is usually based on a patient's medical history, physical examination, and sometimes imaging tests such as a duplex ultrasound to assess blood flow and vein condition. While there is no cure for PTS, management focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications. This often involves wearing compression stockings to improve blood flow and reduce swelling, regular exercise, and elevating the affected limb when resting. In cases of severe ulceration, specialized wound care may be required. Early and effective treatment of DVT is crucial in reducing the risk of developing postthrombotic syndrome.
