Postsensor is a term used to describe a sensor node designed to be mounted on a post, pole, column, or similar support structure. In civil and infrastructure monitoring, a postsensor provides localized measurements of structural, environmental, or operational conditions at a fixed position. A postsensor typically includes one or more sensing elements, a power source, a data processing unit, and a communications module, all housed in a rugged enclosure suitable for outdoor use.

Common sensing modalities include accelerometers and strain gauges for structural health monitoring, tilt sensors for orientation, temperature and humidity sensors, vibration sensors, and imaging or optical sensors. Many postsensors are multi-sensor nodes that integrate several modalities to support data fusion and more robust condition assessment.

Applications include monitoring utility poles and transmission lines, bridges, light posts, and other fixed supports in urban environments; they are also used on agricultural trellises and in industrial installations where fixed-position measurements are valuable. Postsensors enable localized data collection without real-time human presence, supporting asset management and preventive maintenance programs.

Deployment typically involves wired or wireless connectivity. Wireless options include LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, Zigbee, and cellular links; power may be supplied by batteries, energy harvesting, or mains where available. Designs emphasize low power consumption, reliability, and protection from weather, tampering, and vandalism.

Data handling often involves local edge processing for event detection and then transmission to a central data platform or cloud. Time stamping, synchronization, calibration, and periodic maintenance are required to ensure accuracy and long-term performance.

Limitations and challenges include environmental exposure, battery life, sensor drift, installation accessibility, and security concerns. As part of broader sensor networks, postsensors contribute to real-time monitoring, asset management, and preventive maintenance in smart city and infrastructure programs.
