Postproduksjon, or post-production, refers to the phase that follows principal photography or live recording in the creation of audiovisual content such as films, television programmes, music videos, documentaries, and digital media. During this stage, raw footage and audio are assembled, refined, and transformed into a polished final product that meets artistic, technical, and distribution requirements.

The core activities of postproduksjon include editing, where scenes are cut, rearranged, and threaded together to establish narrative flow; audio post‑production, which covers dialogue editing, sound effects (foley), music placement, and mixing; and color grading, an adjustment of colour, contrast, and luminance that gives the material the desired aesthetic and visual consistency. Technical tasks such as visual effects, compositing, graphics insertion, closed captioning, and translation/fair‑use subtitles are also commonly integrated into the post‑production process.

Post‑production workflows are often organised into phases. An initial assembly establishes the rough cut and identifies any production gaps. A fine‑cut refines pacing and takes creative decisions such as scene flow and transitions. After the final edit, sound design and mixing are completed, followed by colour grading and the creation of delivery masters. The final masters are then encoded into the various formats required by broadcasters, streaming platforms, or home media.

Many post‑production studios employ industry-standard software packages, such as Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere Pro for editing, Pro Tools or DaVinci Resolve for sound and colour, and After Effects or Nuke for visual effects. Collaboration tools and cloud‑based file sharing have expanded the flexibility of post‑production teams, allowing geographically dispersed post‑production specialists to work effectively together.
