Postapartheid is a term used to describe the period in South Africa following the formal end of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic government in 1994. The term encompasses the political, economic, and social transitions from minority rule to a multiracial constitutional order, and the ongoing efforts to address the legacies of segregation and inequality.

Politically, the transition was anchored by multiracial elections in 1994, the interim constitution, and the 1996 final Constitution with a Bill of Rights. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (1996–1998) sought to address abuses under apartheid. The postapartheid state aimed to create inclusive institutions and protect civil liberties while decentralizing governance through a new administrative framework.

Economic policy shifted from liberalization to a mix of growth-oriented and redistribution measures. Early frameworks included the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and later the Growth, Employment and Redistribution strategy (GEAR). Policies such as affirmative action and Black Economic Empowerment sought to redress colonial and apartheid inequities, while social programs expanded access to housing, health, education, and welfare.

However, the period has faced ongoing challenges: persistent income inequality, unemployment, service-delivery protests, land reform disputes, and crime. Critics debate whether democratic institutions alone suffice to transform social and economic structures, and some scholars point to uneven regional development and governance challenges in later years. The term postapartheid remains a descriptive label for a political and social transition rather than a fixed ideology, and discussions continue about the pace and scope of transformation.
