It refers to a small, often communal living space that was traditionally found in older apartment buildings, particularly in urban areas of Finland. These spaces were typically located at the top of a stairwell, often in the attic or under the eaves of the building, and were originally intended for various purposes.

Historically, porrastuvas served multiple functions depending on the building and the needs of its residents. They might have been used as storage for belongings, a place for laundry to dry, or even as temporary shelter for those in need. In some cases, they were also used as communal spaces for residents to gather or for building caretakers to reside.
