Polymethacrylic refers to polymers derived from methacrylic acid or its esters. Methacrylic acid, with the chemical formula CH2=C(CH3)COOH, is an unsaturated carboxylic acid. Its esters, such as methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, and butyl methacrylate, are commonly used monomers. Polymethacrylics are synthesized through various polymerization techniques, including free-radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, and group transfer polymerization.

The properties of polymethacrylics are highly dependent on the specific monomer used and the polymerization conditions. Generally, they exhibit good transparency, weatherability, and chemical resistance. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), perhaps the most well-known polymethacrylic, is a transparent thermoplastic often referred to as acrylic glass or Plexiglas. PMMA is known for its impact resistance, rigidity, and ease of fabrication. It finds applications in a wide range of products, including windows, lenses, displays, and decorative items.

Other polymethacrylics, depending on the ester group, can offer different characteristics. For instance, polymers derived from longer-chain methacrylate esters tend to be more flexible and have lower glass transition temperatures. These variations allow for tailoring the material properties for specific applications, such as coatings, adhesives, and impact modifiers. The ester linkage in the polymer backbone contributes to their stability, while the presence of the methyl group on the alpha-carbon differentiates them from their polyacrylate counterparts, often resulting in increased rigidity and hardness.
