Polyesterihartseiksi, commonly referred to as polyester resins, are synthetic thermosetting polymers that undergo a chemical curing process to harden into a rigid solid. These resins are derived from polyesters, which are polymers containing ester functional groups in their main chain. In the context of polyester resins, the starting materials typically include a diol (an alcohol with two hydroxyl groups) and a dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride. Common diols used are propylene glycol and ethylene glycol, while phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride are frequently employed acids.

The curing process of polyester resins involves a chemical reaction, usually initiated by a catalyst and a promoter. This reaction cross-links the polymer chains, forming a three-dimensional network that gives the hardened resin its strength and durability. The most common type of polyester resin used in composites is unsaturated polyester resin, which contains double bonds in its molecular structure that readily participate in the cross-linking reaction.

Polyester resins are widely used in various applications due to their versatility, good mechanical properties, and cost-effectiveness. They are a staple in the production of fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP), also known as GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic). In this application, the resin is combined with glass fibers to create strong, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant materials used in boat hulls, automotive parts, construction panels, and storage tanks. They are also found in decorative applications like coatings, adhesives, and castings, as well as in the manufacturing of synthetic marble and solid surfaces. The properties of the cured resin can be tailored by selecting different types of glycols, acids, and additives.
