Polyaryletherketones, often abbreviated as PAEK, are a family of high-performance thermoplastics known for their exceptional mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. These polymers are characterized by a repeating structure that includes aromatic rings linked by ether and ketone functional groups. This molecular architecture imparts remarkable strength, stiffness, and resistance to a wide range of aggressive environments.

The most well-known member of this family is polyetheretherketone, or PEEK. Other common PAEKs include polyetherketone (PEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and polyaryletherketone (PAEK itself, sometimes referring to a specific blend or copolymer). The precise arrangement and ratio of ether and ketone linkages influence the final properties of the polymer, allowing for tailored material characteristics.

PAEKs exhibit excellent thermal stability, with high continuous use temperatures and good resistance to creep even at elevated temperatures. Their inherent flame retardancy and low smoke emission further enhance their suitability for demanding applications. Chemically, they are highly resistant to a broad spectrum of organic and inorganic solvents, acids, and bases, making them ideal for use in harsh chemical processing and industrial settings.

They are often employed as metal replacements in components requiring high strength-to-weight ratios, wear resistance, and resistance to fatigue and abrasion.
