They range from elastic sleeves to rigid braces and immobilizers and are used in sports, rehabilitation, and for chronic knee conditions. The main purposes are to reduce pain, improve proprioception, limit undesired knee movement, and protect healing tissues.

Common types include knee sleeves (neoprene or fabric) offering mild compression and warmth with flexible movement; hinged knee braces that add lateral support and protect ligaments during rehabilitation or high-demand activities; immobilizers or knee braces with rigid components used after surgery or for severe injuries to restrict motion; patellar stabilization straps that unload stress from the patellar tendon.

Materials vary: neoprene, fabric blends, plastic shells, and metal or polycarbonate hinges. Fit and size are crucial; most use velcro closures or straps. Proper sizing requires measuring around the knee at a specific point and following manufacturer guidelines.

Indications include ligament sprains/tears, meniscal injuries, osteoarthritis, postoperative protection, and general knee instability. They are not a substitute for medical care when serious injury is suspected, and incorrect use can worsen symptoms. Safety considerations include skin irritation, circulation checks, and avoiding excessive compression.

Care and maintenance involve regular cleaning per instructions, air drying, and avoiding heat. Evidence on effectiveness ranges from modest pain relief to improved function in some conditions, but braces do not heal injuries themselves.
