Pollinerade is a Swedish term meaning “pollinated,” used to describe plants or flowers that have received pollen sufficient for fertilization. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the male anthers to the female stigma in flowering plants, enabling fertilization and subsequent seed and fruit development. The process begins when pollen lands on a compatible stigma, after which pollen tubes grow through the style toward the ovules in the ovary to deliver sperm cells that fertilize the egg.

Pollination occurs via abiotic vectors such as wind or water, and biotic vectors including insects (bees, flies, butterflies), birds, and bats. Many plants have evolved traits that attract specific pollinators, a feature known as pollination syndrome, including flower color, scent, nectar production, and landing platforms. Self-pollination occurs when pollen from the same flower or plant fertilizes ovules; cross-pollination involves different individuals and generally promotes genetic diversity.
