Polivinylkloridi, commonly known as PVC, is a widely used synthetic plastic polymer prepared by the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer. It is the third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer globally, after polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC is available in two primary forms: rigid (unplasticized) and flexible (plasticized).

Rigid PVC is often used in construction for pipes, window frames, siding, and roofing membranes. Its durability, resistance to corrosion and weathering, and cost-effectiveness make it an ideal material for these applications. Flexible PVC, on the other hand, incorporates plasticizers to increase its flexibility and elasticity. This form finds applications in electrical insulation, inflatable products, medical tubing, flooring, and clothing.

The production of PVC involves the polymerization of vinyl chloride, a process that can be carried out through suspension, emulsion, or bulk polymerization methods. The properties of the final PVC product can be tailored by the addition of various additives, such as stabilizers, plasticizers, fillers, and pigments, during the manufacturing process.

While PVC offers numerous advantages, its production and disposal can raise environmental concerns. The use of chlorine in its manufacturing process and the potential release of harmful substances during incineration are subjects of ongoing research and regulatory attention. However, ongoing efforts in recycling and the development of alternative plasticizers are aimed at mitigating these impacts.
