Polivinylkloridi

Polivinylkloridi, commonly known as PVC or polyvinyl chloride, is a widely used synthetic plastic polymer. Its chemical formula is (C2H3Cl)n, indicating a long chain of repeating vinyl chloride monomers. PVC is produced through the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). It is one of the most produced plastics globally, ranking third in volume after polyethylene and polypropylene.

The material's versatility stems from its ability to be manufactured in various forms, ranging from rigid to flexible. Rigid PVC is used in applications such as pipes, window frames, and siding. Flexible PVC, achieved by adding plasticizers, is found in applications like electrical cable insulation, flooring, inflatable products, and medical devices. PVC's inherent properties include good chemical resistance, durability, and flame retardancy.

However, concerns exist regarding the environmental impact of PVC production and disposal. The production process can release harmful chemicals, and the presence of chlorine in its structure makes recycling more complex compared to other plastics. When incinerated, PVC can produce dioxins and other toxic byproducts. Despite these challenges, PVC remains a cost-effective and functional material for a vast array of industrial and consumer products.
