Polineuropati refers to a condition affecting multiple peripheral nerves, often symmetrically. The peripheral nervous system includes nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord, responsible for transmitting signals between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. When these nerves are damaged, it can lead to a variety of symptoms.

The causes of polineuropati are diverse and can include metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, vitamin deficiencies (especially B vitamins), autoimmune diseases like Guillain-Barré syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), infections, exposure to toxins or certain medications, and hereditary factors. In some instances, the cause may remain unknown, a condition termed idiopathic polineuropati.

Symptoms typically manifest as a loss of sensation, pain, tingling, or a burning feeling, often starting in the feet and hands and progressing upwards. Muscle weakness is also common, potentially leading to difficulty with walking or fine motor skills. The specific symptoms and their severity depend on which types of nerve fibers are affected and the underlying cause.

Diagnosis involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and often nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) to assess nerve and muscle function. Blood tests may be performed to identify underlying causes like diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. Treatment strategies are aimed at addressing the underlying cause, managing symptoms, and improving quality of life. This can include medication for pain, physical therapy, and in some cases, immunotherapy.
