Polarization diversity is a wireless communication technique that uses multiple polarization states of electromagnetic waves to improve link reliability and reduce fading. By exploiting decorrelated fading between orthogonal polarization channels, systems can maintain higher performance in multipath environments. The simplest form uses two orthogonal polarizations, such as vertical and horizontal, or linear and circular polarization.

Implementation relies on dual-polarized antennas at the transmitter and/or receiver. The two polarization channels experience different fading and interference conditions, so the receiver combines the acquired signals to maximize signal quality. Common combining methods include selection combining, equal-gain combining, and maximal-ratio combining. In modern systems, polarization diversity is often integrated with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to further enhance capacity and resilience.

Performance depends on how well the polarization channels decorrelate, which is influenced by cross-polarization discrimination, antenna design, and the propagation environment. In rich multipath, polarization components can provide independent paths and yield significant diversity gains. In line-of-sight or with strong polarization preservation, gains may be limited. Polarization mismatch between transmitter and receiver can reduce link budget, while circular polarization can mitigate orientation sensitivity.

Applications span various wireless systems, including cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and outdoor-to-indoor links, where polarization diversity is used as a practical means to enhance robustness without additional spectrum or time/frequency resources. It is often considered as part of broader diversity and MIMO strategies in antenna design and network planning.
