Polümetüülmetakrülaat, commonly abbreviated as PMMA, is a synthetic acrylic polymer composed of the monomer methyl methacrylate. It is a transparent thermoplastic often used as a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is also known by trade names such as Plexiglas, Lucite, and Perspex.

PMMA is produced through the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The process can be carried out via bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization, or emulsion polymerization. The properties of the resulting PMMA can be modified by altering the polymerization method and the addition of various additives.

The primary applications of PMMA stem from its optical clarity, rigidity, and resistance to ultraviolet light. It is widely used in the production of windows for aircraft, vehicles, and buildings, as well as in aquariums, lenses, and display screens. Due to its biocompatibility and transparency, it also finds use in medical applications, such as bone cement, intraocular lenses, and dental prosthetics.

PMMA is known for its good weatherability and resistance to discoloration when exposed to sunlight. It can be easily molded, machined, and bonded, making it a versatile material for various manufacturing processes. While it is more brittle than some other plastics, it is significantly less prone to shattering than glass. PMMA can be recycled, although it is not always economically viable.
