Plugtype refers to the standardized design of electrical plugs that connect a portable device’s power cord to a corresponding wall outlet. A plug type specifies the shape, pin count, spacing, and grounding method of the male connector, and it is closely tied to the electrical system and safety requirements of a region. In practice, plug types determine what sockets and cords are compatible with each other and influence product labeling, travel preparedness, and electrical safety.

Across the world, a variety of plug types exist, largely aligned with regional voltage levels and safety standards. Common examples include Type A and Type B in North America and parts of Central America (two flat pins, with Type B adding a grounding pin), Type C (two round pins used widely in Europe and Asia), Type E/F (two round pins with earth contacts in some European countries), Type G (three rectangular pins used in the United Kingdom and Ireland), and Type I (slanted two-pin plus grounding in Australia and China). Other regions maintain additional standards such as Type D, Type H, Type J, Type K, Type L, and Type N, each with its own pin configuration and grounding method. Some devices and regions also differentiate between ungrounded and grounded connectors and between fixed versus detachable power cords.

Standards for plugtypes are coordinated by international and national bodies. The International Electrotechnical Commission and various national regulators publish specifications to ensure safety, compatibility, and interchangeability where feasible. In global markets, travelers often encounter multiple plugtypes and rely on adapters and voltage converters to use devices abroad. Designers and manufacturers may tailor products to specific regions or pursue multi-region solutions, balancing convenience, safety, and regulatory compliance.
