Historically, playwriting developed in ancient Greece with playwrights such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, then continued through Roman and medieval traditions, the Renaissance, and into modern theatre. In the 19th and 20th centuries, realism, naturalism, and later avant-garde movements expanded forms and methods. Playwriting is practiced worldwide, reflecting diverse languages, cultures, and performance practices.

The writing process typically involves drafting, reading aloud, revising, and collaborating with directors, actors, and dramaturgs. Playwrights tailor language to stage conventions and production constraints, such as set design, lighting, sound, and run time. While closely related to screenwriting, playwriting emphasizes live audience reception, spatial dynamics, and the immediacy of performance.

Notable topics include character voice, subtext, dramatic irony, and thematic unity. Writers may work independently or for theatre companies, workshops, or educational settings, and may adapt or translate existing works for new productions.
