Play-by-post, often abbreviated as PBP or PbP, refers to a style of collaborative storytelling or role-playing game played through written posts, typically exchanged via online forums, email, or dedicated platforms. Unlike live-action role-playing or tabletop games that occur in real-time, PBP games allow participants to contribute at their own pace, responding to posts from other players and the game's facilitator, known as the Game Master (GM) or Dungeon Master (DM).

The core mechanic of play-by-post involves players describing their characters' actions, thoughts, and dialogue in written posts. The GM, in turn, describes the game world, the reactions of non-player characters (NPCs), and the outcomes of player actions. This process is iterative, with each post building upon the previous ones, creating a narrative tapestry woven by the group.
