It is intended to guide decision-making, budgeting, and legislative activity rather than to describe campaign rhetoric or ad hoc actions.

The term is used especially in Scandinavian and German-speaking political contexts, where a party platform or coalition agreement outlines priorities, targets, and resource implications. Platformpolitik provides a public, formal statement of what the party or coalition intends to achieve and how it plans to implement its proposals.

Development and content typically involve policy research, expert input, stakeholder consultation, and internal deliberation within party organs or among coalition partners. Once approved, the platform informs legislative proposals, budget framing, and administrative actions. In multi-party coalitions, platformpolitik often requires compromises and may be revised during the term as conditions change or new information emerges.
