Plastic-eating refers to the process by which certain microorganisms, enzymes, or synthetic materials break down plastic polymers into smaller, less harmful compounds. This phenomenon has gained attention as a potential solution to the global plastic pollution crisis, where millions of tons of plastic waste accumulate in landfills, oceans, and natural environments annually.

The discovery of plastic-eating organisms dates back to the 1970s, when scientists identified bacteria capable of degrading polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common plastic found in bottles and textiles. Since then, research has expanded to include other plastics, such as polystyrene and polyurethane. One of the most notable examples is the bacterium *Ideonella sakaiensis*, which was found in Japan to consume PET by producing enzymes that break down the plastic into monomers like terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, which can then be reused in new plastic production.

Beyond natural microorganisms, scientists have also engineered enzymes to enhance plastic degradation. For instance, in 2018, researchers discovered a mutant enzyme called PETase, derived from *Ideonella sakaiensis*, which was found to be up to 20 times more efficient at breaking down PET than the original enzyme. Further modifications have led to the development of enzymes capable of degrading other types of plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene.

While plastic-eating holds promise, challenges remain. The process is often slow, and many plastics require specific conditions—such as heat, moisture, or particular microbial strains—to degrade effectively. Additionally, the breakdown products must be safely managed to avoid environmental or health risks. Research continues to explore scalable solutions, including the use of plastic-eating microbes in industrial waste treatment or the development of biodegradable plastics designed to be consumed by natural processes.

Public and private sectors are increasingly investing in plastic-eating technologies, with companies and governments collaborating to accelerate innovation. However, plastic-eating alone is not a standalone fix; it must be combined with broader efforts like waste reduction, recycling improvements, and policy changes to address plastic pollution effectively.
