Plantbean is a domesticated annual legume grown for its edible seeds, commonly called plantbeans. It is widely cultivated for protein-rich food and for its potential to improve soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation.

Morphology and description: Plantbean plants are herbaceous climbers or sprawling shrubs reaching 0.5–2 meters in height. They have pinnate leaves with three leaflets and produce pea-like flowers in white, pink, or purple shades. The seed pods are slender, initially green, and mature to yellow, brown, or black, each pod containing several seeds.

Distribution and habitat: The precise origin of plantbean is uncertain; today it is cultivated in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions around the world. It prefers warm, well-drained soils and full sun but can tolerate a range of conditions. It is sensitive to frost and prolonged drought without irrigation.

Cultivation: Cultivation practices vary by region. Seeds are sown in spring after last frost, either directly in the field or in nursery beds for transplanting. Climbing varieties require trellising or supports. Timely irrigation and balanced fertility promote pod set; harvest occurs when pods mature and seeds fully develop. Common pests include aphids and bean beetles; diseases include powdery mildew and root rot.

Uses and nutrition: Seeds are eaten cooked, canned, or dried, and are a source of protein, fiber, and micronutrients. Plantbeans contribute to crop rotation due to their nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, which enriches soil for subsequent crops.

Breeding and research: Breeding efforts focus on increasing yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, and seed quality. Genomic tools and conventional selection are used to improve agronomic performance and the efficiency of nitrogen fixation.
