Planetorbit is a term used in astronomy to describe the orbital motion of a planet around a star. It denotes the path traced by the planet due to the star’s gravity and, in systems with multiple bodies, the gravitational influence of other planets. The concept is rooted in Kepler’s laws and refined by Newtonian gravity, and is typically described using a set of orbital elements that define the size, shape, and orientation of the orbit as well as the planet’s position along it.

Key orbital elements include the semi-major axis (a), which sets the orbit’s size; eccentricity (e), which measures deviation from a circle; inclination (i), the tilt relative to a reference plane; the longitude of the ascending node (Ω) and the argument of periapsis (ω), which specify the orbit’s orientation; and the mean anomaly (M) or epoch, which locates the planet along its orbit at a given time.

Orbit evolution: In systems with multiple planets, mutual gravitational perturbations can cause slow changes in these elements over time, including precession, nodal regression, and secular resonances. Planet migration within a protoplanetary disk, tidal effects, and stellar mass loss can alter orbits, affecting stability and climate on the planet.
